Experiment content:
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is a solution that can be used for data protection of VM environments (e.g. VMware and Hyper-V), and enables the data protection and availability for virtual and physical machines of database like Oracle and SQL Server. This experiment will guide you to backup and restore SQL databases quickly with IBM Spectrum Protect Plus. (duration: 20-25mn)

- Windows Server 2012 R2 with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (VM)

Backup and restore of databases of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus

The following content is displayed on the same screen for your experiment so that you can make any necessary reference in experiment. Start your experiment now!

  1. Log onto the SPP Management Interface(Duration: 0.5 min)
    Open the Firefox browser and click Sign in to enter the SPP Management Interface.

  2. Set up the SLA backup policy for databases(Duration: 3 min)
    Click Application > SQL > Backup in turn in the left-hand navigation bar.
    Under Instances, click WIN-NTASDQ855H1.
    Check the database to be backed up: sppdb.
    Click Select SLA Policy.
    Check 4.SQL under the SLA Policy.
    Click Save to complete the setting step.

  3. Execute the database backup task(Duration: 3 min)
    Under the SLA Policy Status, find the policy 4.SQL.
    Click Actions at the far right, and select Start to execute the backup task immediately.

  4. Monitor the database backup task(Duration: 10 min)
    Click to the left of the policy 4.SQLL, and you will see a backup task with a Status of RUNNING.
    Click on the left, and you will see the details of the task being executed.
    The backup task will be completed in 8min, and the Status will change to COMPLETED.

  5. Set up the database restore location(Duration: 5 min)
    Click Application > SQL > Restore in turn in the left-hand navigation bar.
    Under Instances, click WIN-NTASDQ855H1 >.
    Click to the right of sppdb >, and add this database to the restore list.
    Click Options at the lower right corner.
    Select the default Restore to original Instance for Destination.
    Type a name (e.g. sppdb1) under the New Database Name (please note that no duplication of name with the original database sppdb is allowed).
    Select Test for Restored Type.

    Click Save at the lower left corner.

  6. Execute the database restore task(Duration: 5 min)
    Click Restore on the upper right corner to execute the database restore task.
    You can view the restore progress in the Job Session(s).
    The restore task will be completed in about 3min when 100% is displayed in the Progress column.

  7. View the restored database(Duration: 2 min)
    Minimize the Firefox browser, and double click (icon name: 03_win2k12_SQL) on the desktop to log onto this VM.
    Wait for about 1.5min until SQL starts, and then Click Connect.

    Unfold Databases on the left, and you will see the restored database sppdb1.
